Understanding Your Battery Stats

Learn what battery health percentage, cycle count, temperature, and condition mean in Battery Health 3.

Battery Details

The Battery Details section in Battery Health 3 gives you a detailed look at the health and status of your MacBook's battery. Here is what each stat means.

Battery Health Percentage

Battery health represents your battery's current maximum capacity compared to its original design capacity. A new battery starts at or near 100%. Over time, as the battery chemically ages, this percentage will gradually decrease. This is normal for all lithium-ion batteries.

A battery health above 80% is generally considered to be in good shape. If it drops significantly below that, you may want to consider having your battery serviced.

Cycle Count

A charge cycle is completed each time you use a total of 100% of your battery's capacity, though not necessarily all at once. For example, if you use 50% one day and recharge fully, then use 50% the next day, that counts as one cycle. MacBook batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of their original capacity after a certain number of cycles (typically 1000 for modern MacBooks).

Temperature

Battery temperature is displayed in real time. Lithium-ion batteries perform best and last longest when kept within a moderate temperature range. High temperatures can accelerate battery wear, so keeping your Mac in a well-ventilated environment is recommended.

Battery Condition

Battery condition is a summary status reported by macOS. Common values include:

  • Normal -- Your battery is functioning as expected.
  • Service Recommended -- Your battery is still functioning but may hold less charge than when it was new. Consider having it checked by Apple or an authorized service provider.
