Learn how to use the App Uninstaller tool in Disk Aid to completely remove applications and their associated files from your Mac.

Overview

The App Uninstaller tool is the best way to completely remove applications and their associated files from your Mac. Simply dragging an app to the Trash often leaves behind preference files, caches, and containers. App Uninstaller finds and removes all of them.

Selecting Your Applications Folder

When you first launch App Uninstaller, you are asked to select your Applications folder.

  1. Click the Select Applications Folder button.
  2. Your Applications folder opens by default in the Folder Select window.
  3. Click Choose in the bottom-right corner.

Running a Scan

  1. Click the Start button to begin scanning.
  2. Wait for the scan to complete. Disk Aid will index all applications and their associated files.

Reviewing Results

After the scan, you are presented with a list of all applications found in your Applications folder.

For each app, you can see its name, icon, location, details, and size. The interface also shows your current free space and how much will be freed based on your selections.

  • Use the search bar to find a specific app by name.
  • Use the sort dropdown to sort apps by size, name, or selection in ascending or descending order.
  • Click the Details button next to any app to see all of its associated files, including plist files and container folders.

Uninstalling Apps

  1. Tick the apps you want to remove. You can also expand the details to selectively keep certain associated files.
  2. Review the Amount to be Freed and New Free Space figures at the top of the window.
  3. Click Next to proceed.
  4. Confirm the deletion. Your selected apps and their associated files will be removed.
  5. A results screen shows what was removed. You can choose to scan again to remove additional apps.

We always recommend making a Time Machine backup before uninstalling apps, so you can restore anything you might need later.

Limitations

Due to macOS sandbox restrictions, App Uninstaller may not be able to remove all applications completely. When this is the case, it will direct you to the specific file locations so you can manually remove any files it could not delete automatically.
