Disk Cleaner
Learn how to use the Disk Cleaner tool in Disk Aid to free up disk space by removing caches, logs, and other unneeded files.
Overview
The Disk Cleaner tool helps you free up disk space by scanning for and removing gigabytes of unneeded files from your Mac, including caches, logs, trash, and downloads.
Selecting Your User Folder
When you first launch Disk Cleaner, you are asked to select your User folder so the tool can access your drive for scanning.
- Click the Select User Folder button.
- In the Folder Select window that appears, choose your User folder (this typically corresponds to your name).
- Click Choose in the bottom-right corner of the window.

Running a Scan
Once your User folder is selected, Disk Cleaner displays an overview of your Free Space, Used Space, and Total Capacity, along with the percentage of your drive that is in use.
- Click the Start Scan button.
- Wait for the scan to complete. This can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the size of your drive and whether it is a Solid State Drive or a traditional Hard Drive.
Reviewing Scan Results
After the scan finishes, you will see a full overview of what is causing clutter on your Mac, how much space you currently have, how much can be freed up, and what your new available disk space will be.

- Tick or untick individual categories to choose exactly what to clean.
- Click the i button next to any category to learn more about what it contains.
- Click the Details button next to a category to see exactly which files will be deleted.
- Click the View button next to a category to open that folder in Finder.
Cleaning Files
- Select the categories you want to clean.
- Click the Clean button.
- Once complete, you will see a summary of how much space was freed up and a breakdown of the content that was removed.
You can then choose to scan again, switch to another Disk Aid tool, or quit the app.
We always recommend making a Time Machine backup before cleaning files, so you can restore anything you might need later.
