What Are Time Machine Snapshots?

macOS creates local Time Machine snapshots on your startup disk as part of its backup process. These snapshots can accumulate over time and consume a significant amount of disk space, especially if your Time Machine backup drive is not always connected.

Managing Snapshots with Disk Doctor Pro

Disk Doctor Pro includes a Time Machine snapshot management feature that lets you view and remove local snapshots directly from the app. This can be an effective way to recover disk space without affecting your external Time Machine backups.

Viewing Snapshots

During a scan, Disk Doctor Pro detects any local Time Machine snapshots stored on your Mac and displays them alongside other scan results. You can see the size of each snapshot and when it was created.

Removing Snapshots

To remove Time Machine snapshots:

  1. Run a scan in Disk Doctor Pro.
  2. Locate the Time Machine category in the sidebar.
  3. Review the listed snapshots and select the ones you want to remove.
  4. Click Remove Selected Files to delete the selected snapshots.

Tip: macOS will automatically recreate snapshots during future backups, so removing old ones is safe and will not affect your ability to back up in the future.
