Selecting and Removing Duplicate Files

Learn how to safely select and remove duplicate files in Duplicate Detective 2.

Selecting Files for Removal

After a scan is complete, you can mark duplicates for deletion by ticking the checkbox next to each file you want to remove. You can also use the Auto Select button to automatically select duplicate copies while keeping one version of each file.

Tip: Do not tick all copies of a file unless you want to remove it from your system entirely. Auto Select will always keep at least one copy.

Removing Selected Files

  1. Review your selections carefully. Use the file preview panel to verify any files you are unsure about.
  2. Click the Clean button to proceed.
  3. A confirmation screen will appear showing all files marked for deletion.

  1. Click Confirm Selection to delete the selected files.

By default, deleted files are moved to the Trash, so you can recover them if needed. You can change this behaviour in Settings (press Cmd + ,) to permanently delete files instead.

After Removal

Once the deletion is complete, you can:

  • Continue removing more duplicates from your current set of results.
  • Click New Scan in the left-hand column to start a fresh scan.
  • Quit the app.

Staying Safe

  • Check before you delete. Use the preview panel and the magnifying glass icon to review files and their locations before removing them.
  • Use Trash mode. Keep the default Trash deletion method so you can recover files if you change your mind.
  • Back up first. Consider creating a backup before removing large numbers of files. See our backup guide for instructions.
