What Can Duplicate Detective Scan?

Duplicate Detective can scan a wide range of storage devices and locations for duplicate files.

Supported Storage Types

• Internal drives -- Your Mac's built-in hard drive or SSD.
• External USB drives -- Any USB-connected hard drive, SSD, or flash drive.
• Network drives -- Mounted network volumes accessible through Finder.
• Other readable storage -- Essentially any storage device or volume that your Mac can read.

Full Disk Access

To scan folders outside of your personal user directory, Duplicate Detective may require Full Disk Access. You can grant this permission in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access. Without it, some system-level and protected folders may be inaccessible.

Scan Time Considerations

Scan duration depends on several factors:

• The speed of the storage device being scanned
• The total number of files and folders in the selected location
• Your Mac's overall performance

If you are scanning a very large location (such as an entire external drive), consider scanning in smaller batches by selecting individual subfolders. This keeps scan times more manageable and lets you review results in stages.
