How to install and start using Extractor for Mac to extract archive files

Installation

Extractor is available on the Mac App Store. Download and install it like any other Mac app. Extractor requires macOS 11 or later.

Opening Extractor

After installing, launch Extractor from your Applications folder or Launchpad. You will see the main Extractor window, which serves as the drop target for your archive files.

Extracting Your First Archive

The fastest way to extract files with Extractor is drag and drop:

  1. Locate the archive file you want to extract in Finder.
  2. Drag the file onto the Extractor window.
  3. Extractor begins extracting immediately and displays a progress indicator.
  4. Once complete, the status changes to "Done" and the extracted files are available at your chosen destination.

You can also open archives through File > Open or by double-clicking an archive file if Extractor is set as the default handler for that format.

Setting Extractor as the Default Archive Handler

To change the default app for opening archive files:

  1. Right-click an archive file in Finder.
  2. Select Get Info.
  3. Change the "Open with" application to Extractor.
  4. Click Change All to apply this to all files of that type.

Appearance

Extractor supports both Light and Dark mode. It follows your macOS system appearance automatically, so it fits right in with the rest of your desktop.
