Window Manager - User Guide

Window Manager is the perfect utility for managing the positions and sizes of your windows. The app allows you to quickly rearrange windows on your Mac using a range of preset options via its customizable shortcuts, fullscreen button overlay menu, menubar dropdown, and by dragging windows into various hotspots around the edges of your screen.

First Launch:

Upon first launch, you are presented with the following setup screen, which gives Window Manager the permission to manage your windows:

Please click on the blue button on the bottom right to ‘Open System Preferences’. Next, click on the gold padlock on the bottom left corner (seen below) to unlock the padlock and allow you to let Window Manager be selected to manage your windows.

Please click the checkbox to select Window Manager so that it can properly run and manage the positioning of your windows. You may now close your System Preferences menu by clicking on the red x button on the top left corner of the window.

Using the App:

By default, the app functions as a menubar app. What this means is that it runs in the top menubar on your Mac’s screen.

How to align windows:

There are four ways in total to use this app to position windows on your Mac: 

1. By dragging windows into various hotspots around the edges of your screen:
This lets you drag app windows to different corners of your Mac’s screen to have them auto align into position. Drag windows into corners for quarters, to the sides for halves, top for maximise and the bottom for thirds and two thirds.

2. Using the menubar dropdown:
You can select any of the listed alignment options seen below to instantly position your active app window to the size and placement of the screen you desire.

3. Using the fullscreen button overlay menu: Window Manager adds a menu overlay that appears when you hover over the green fullscreen button on virtually any window. The overlay menu allows you to pick from our most popular window arrangements. Simply click on the size and position you want and the window will be instantly transformed, as seen below.
 

4. Using customizable shortcuts on your keyboard: Via the Preferences menu, you can assign keyboard shortcuts and set custom sizes for window positioning. Every single alignment positioning hotkey is completely customizable using your Mac’s keyboard. Furthermore, you can also instruct Window Manager to assign a custom size for an app window, either set via a percentage relative to the screen size, or otherwise in terms of absolute size depending on the height and width of the window.

Preferences Menu:

Welcome Tab: Once you have given the app permission to manage your windows, you are presented with the main app preferences menu with the welcome screen, as showcased below:

The Preferences tab lets you control basic app behaviour, where you can select each tick box to control such functionalities:

- Start at login: This makes the app launch at login whenever your Mac boots up

- Hide Preferences window on startup: This hides the Preferences menu each time the app launches/your Mac boots up

- Show dock icon: The Window Manager icon appears in the dock

- Show menubar icon: The Window Manager icon appears in the menubar

- Enable hot corners: This lets you drag app windows to different corners of your Mac’s screen to have them auto align into position. Drag windows into corners for quarters, to the sides for halves, top for maximise and the bottom for thirds and two thirds.

- Enable fullscreen button overlay on hover: Window Manager adds a menu overlay that appears when you hover over the green fullscreen button on virtually any window. The overlay menu allows you to pick from our most popular window arrangements. Simply click on the size and position you want and the window will be instantly transformed.

- Enable error messages: You will see an error message pop up showing an unsuccessful full resizing for certain apps and windows that just can’t be resized due to their displayed nature. (For e.g., the Mac App Store app window cannot be resized to a third of its size using Window Manager).

Shortcuts Tab: This menu lets you assign keyboard shortcuts and set custom sizes for window positioning. Every single alignment positioning hotkey is completely customizable using your Mac’s keyboard.

Custom Size: You can instruct Window Manager to assign a custom size for an app window, either set via a percentage relative to the screen size, or in terms of absolute size depending on the height and width of the window. You can set the custom size via the app's preferences within the Shortcuts tab.
