Getting Started with Magic Trail

Learn how to launch Magic Trail, enable the cursor trail effect, and use the basic menu bar controls.

Magic Trail adds fun, animated trail effects to your mouse cursor on Mac. Choose from 12 different trail styles, customise the size and length, and toggle the effect on or off from your menu bar or with a keyboard shortcut.

Launching the App

Magic Trail runs as a menu bar app. After launching, you will see its icon in the menu bar at the top of your screen. On first launch, a welcome screen appears with a brief overview of the app.

The trail effect is enabled by default. Move your mouse to see it in action right away.

Click the Magic Trail icon in the menu bar to access quick controls without opening Settings:

  • Trail Style -- switch between the 12 available styles via a submenu.
  • Trail Size -- adjust the size of the trail particles using a slider.
  • Trail Length -- adjust how long the trail extends behind your cursor using a slider.
  • Disable/Enable Magic Trail -- toggle the trail effect on or off.
  • Settings -- open the full Settings panel.

Background Operation

When you close the Settings window, Magic Trail continues running in the background via your menu bar. The trail effect remains active as long as the app is running.

To fully stop the trail effect, either click Disable Magic Trail from the menu bar dropdown or quit the app entirely using Cmd+Q.

Multi-Monitor Support

Magic Trail works across all connected monitors. The trail effect follows your cursor seamlessly between displays.

Performance

Magic Trail is designed to be lightweight and uses minimal CPU resources. The trail rendering is optimised to run smoothly without impacting your workflow or other applications.

Troubleshooting

The trail effect is not appearing

  1. Click the Magic Trail menu bar icon and make sure Enable Mouse Trail is turned on.
  2. If you assigned a toggle hotkey, you may have accidentally disabled the effect. Press the hotkey again or check the setting in Settings.

The menu bar icon is missing

Relaunch Magic Trail from your Applications folder. The icon should reappear in the menu bar.
