Cleaning Memory
Learn how to use standard clean and Extreme Clean in Memory Clean 3 to free up memory on your Mac.
Standard Clean
To free up memory on your Mac, click the Clean button at the bottom of the Memory Clean 3 window. This purges your Mac's inactive memory, making it available for other apps to use.
Standard clean works best when you have just closed a memory-intensive app or game and want to reclaim that memory quickly.
Extreme Clean
Extreme Clean is an advanced cleaning mode that frees up significantly more memory than a standard clean. It performs a deeper clean of your Mac's memory using a process developed after years of research on how to safely reclaim RAM.
Extreme Clean takes longer to complete than a standard clean. The amount of additional memory freed varies depending on your total RAM, the number of apps currently open, and how much free memory is already available.
Tip: In internal testing on a MacBook Pro with 8 GB of RAM, Extreme Clean freed up between 1 GB and 1.5 GB more memory than a standard clean.
Results
After each clean, Memory Clean 3 will notify you of how much memory was freed. This applies to both standard and Extreme Clean.
A Note on Repeated Cleaning
If you run the cleaning process again immediately after a clean, you may be able to free up additional memory. However, cleaning memory too frequently in a short period of time can cause your Mac to freeze or slow down. We recommend waiting for the cooldown period between cleans unless you are confident in what you are doing.
