Getting Started with Smart Countdown Timer

How to launch Smart Countdown Timer and set your first countdown using natural language on your Mac.

Smart Countdown Timer is a macOS app that lets you set countdown timers using natural language. It displays the countdown in a resizable window, in your menu bar, and on your Dock icon, so you always know how much time remains.

Launching the App

When you first launch Smart Countdown Timer, the main timer window appears with a default countdown of 30 minutes. The current countdown value is also shown in your Mac's menu bar and on the Dock icon.

Setting a Countdown

To set a new countdown, type a time value into the text field below the countdown display. Smart Countdown Timer understands natural language, so you can enter times in a variety of formats:

  • Short form -- Type "2m" for 2 minutes, "10s" for 10 seconds, or "1h" for 1 hour.
  • Full text -- Type "1 hour and 30 minutes" or "90 minutes".
  • Specific time -- Type "3pm" or "in 2 hours" to count down to a particular moment.

The countdown display updates immediately to reflect the new value.

Timer History

Use the up and down arrow keys to cycle through previously entered countdown values. This makes it quick to reuse a timer you have set before without retyping it.

Where the Countdown Appears

The countdown is displayed in three places simultaneously:

  • Timer window -- The main app window with the large countdown display.
  • Menu bar -- A compact countdown in your Mac's menu bar, visible at all times.
  • Dock icon -- The remaining time is shown on the app's Dock icon.

You can configure which of these are active in the Settings panel.

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Spacebar -- Start or pause the current countdown.
  • Cmd+R -- Reset the timer to the original value.
  • Up / Down arrows -- Cycle through previously entered countdown values.
  • Cmd+, -- Open Settings.
