App Crashing Because It Is Not in the Applications Folder
How to fix crashes caused by running a FIPLAB app from the wrong location on your Mac.
If a FIPLAB app crashes shortly after opening, or its menu bar icon appears briefly and then disappears, the app may be running from the wrong location on your Mac.
Why This Happens
When you download an app from fiplab.com, macOS may extract it to a temporary folder instead of your Applications folder. The app will appear to work at first, but macOS periodically cleans up temporary files. When it removes the app's data while the app is still running, the app crashes.
Common signs of this issue include the app crashing repeatedly without any clear cause, the menu bar icon disappearing after launch, and crash reports showing a path containing /private/var/folders/ or a version listed as ???.
How to Check
- Open Activity Monitor from /Applications/Utilities.
- Search for the name of the app.
- If it is running, double-click it and look at the Path shown in the info window.
If the path does not start with /Applications/, the app is running from the wrong location.
How to Fix It
- Quit the app. If it is unresponsive, use Activity Monitor to force quit it.
- Download a fresh copy from fiplab.com.
- Open the downloaded zip file and drag the app into your Applications folder.
- Launch the app from your Applications folder.
Your settings and data will be preserved.
