How to Take a Screen Recording to Send to Support
Step-by-step instructions for recording your screen on macOS and sharing the video with FIPLAB support.
A short screen recording can be incredibly helpful when you're trying to show us a bug or an issue that's hard to describe in words. macOS has built-in tools that make this easy -- no extra software needed.
Method 1: Using the Screenshot Toolbar (macOS Mojave and Later)
This is the quickest way to record your screen on any modern Mac.
- Press Cmd+Shift+5 to open the Screenshot Toolbar at the bottom of your screen.
- You'll see several options. To record video, choose one of the two recording icons:
- Record Entire Screen -- captures everything on your display.
- Record Selected Portion -- lets you drag to select a specific area of the screen.
- Click Options if you'd like to change where the recording is saved, set a timer, or choose whether to record audio from your microphone.
- Click Record to begin.
- When you're finished, click the Stop button in the menu bar (the square icon in a circle), or press Cmd+Control+Esc.
- A thumbnail will appear briefly in the corner of your screen. You can click it to preview or trim the recording, or just wait for it to save automatically.
By default, recordings are saved to your Desktop as .mov files.
Method 2: Using QuickTime Player
QuickTime Player is a good alternative, especially if you want a bit more control over your recording.
- Open QuickTime Player (search for it using Spotlight with Cmd+Space).
- From the menu bar, choose File > New Screen Recording.
- The Screenshot Toolbar will appear (on macOS Mojave and later) or a small recording window (on older macOS versions).
- Choose your recording area and click Record.
- When finished, click the Stop button in the menu bar, or press Cmd+Control+Esc.
- QuickTime will open the recording for you to review. Choose File > Save (or File > Export As) to save it to a location of your choice.
Sending the Recording to Us
Once you have your screen recording file:
- Attach it to your support email. Send it to contact us along with a description of the issue. Most email providers support attachments up to 20-25 MB.
- If the file is too large to email, you can upload it to a file-sharing service like iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or Dropbox, and send us the sharing link instead.
Tip: Try to keep your recording focused on the specific issue. A short, targeted recording (30 seconds to 2 minutes) is usually more helpful than a long one. If possible, start the recording just before you trigger the problem so we can see exactly what leads up to it.
