How to Customize Keyboard Shortcuts

Overview

Every keyboard shortcut in Window Manager is fully customizable. You can reassign any window position to a key combination that suits your workflow, and you can also configure a custom window size.

Changing a Keyboard Shortcut

1. Open Window Manager's Settings window.
2. Click the Shortcuts tab.
3. Find the window position you want to change (for example, Left Half or Maximize).
4. Click the existing shortcut field next to that position.
5. Press the new key combination you want to assign.
6. The shortcut is saved automatically.

Tip: Use modifier keys like Control, Option, Command, and Shift in combination with a letter or arrow key to avoid conflicts with other apps.

Setting a Custom Window Size

In addition to the preset positions, Window Manager lets you define a custom window size:

1. In the Shortcuts tab, locate the Custom Size option.
2. Choose whether to set the size as a percentage of the screen or as an absolute pixel value for width and height.
3. Enter your desired dimensions.
4. Assign a keyboard shortcut to the custom size so you can trigger it instantly.

This is useful when you regularly work with a specific window size that does not match any of the standard halves, thirds, or quarters.

Clearing a Shortcut

To remove a shortcut without replacing it, click the shortcut field for the position and press Delete or Backspace. The position will no longer have a keyboard shortcut assigned, but you can still access it from the menu bar dropdown or the fullscreen button overlay.

Avoiding Conflicts

If you assign a shortcut that is already in use by macOS or another app, the other shortcut may stop working or Window Manager's shortcut may not trigger. Choose unique combinations to avoid conflicts.
